WSOP Online Satellite Opportunities and Strategy

Getting a cheap spot in the World Series of Poker main event is currently the main dream of most online poker players. There are several satellites (qualifying tournaments) available online, but you should be able to decide which is best to try, and what should be your strategy.

Your WSOP satellite strategy have to be based on the type of the qualifier. Below I give some suggestions that have been helping me.

1. Freeroll satellites. These tourneys usually give only one package as prize, and most of the time are very crowded. In tournaments with 2,000 players and one prize, playing tight-passive poker is usually a bad idea. First of all, most of the players are newbies, playing bad hands and hoping to get very lucky. You should take advantage of that, because to win such a satellite you will have to be involved in many dangerous situations. The strategy here is being a little more loose, specially when in good position. You have to build a big bankroll and have some luck to have a chance.

2. Super-satellites. A tourney that gives entry to a satellite is a super-satellite. Take care with them, because most of the time you will be wasting a lot of time for an unreasonable prize. For example: a big tournament has a satellite with a $40 buy-in. This one has super-satellites running all day long, sit-and-gos with a $10 buy-in. A regular $10 sit-and-go pays $50 for 1st place, $30 for second and $20 for third place. This supersatellite gives one entry to the $40 tournament. In this cases, it is better to play regular sit-and-gos and turn your profits in the high buy-ins of some tournaments.

3. Direct satellites. The direct satellites are usually big tournaments, that provide wsop packages (buy-in plus expenses) depending on the number of people. These are the best opportunities for good players, since they know that if 5% people will get a package, they have a chance, depending less on luck. In this situation, the tight aggressive style should be the best to use.

Study the pay-out of the tournaments you are considering to enter, and decide what's best for you. See you at the World Series!
